Night Has Come – Belgian premiere on FilmFest Gent
SYNOPSIS
An anonymous old man wakes up in a sanatorium at an unspecified location. He suffers from amnesia induced by a virus. The people call it the “night” because it steals memories and leaves only darkness. The State steps in with a new program that can store memories and begins to harvest them all, “just in case.” But is the virus really of natural origin? Or was it engineered to provide the next generation with a fresh start (and the State with an easily controlled population)? Quarantine, resistance, riots… Slowly but surely, the old man starts questioning the authenticity of his own memories, while growing increasingly conscious of another truth. Essayistic and experimental, NIGHT HAS COME takes you on a fictional journey only a step away from reality.
For this film Peter Van Goethem assembled Royal Belgian Film Archive footage from the last century to create an original story, narrated by a fictional man as a memory piece. The movie alternates between amateur footage and footage of historical events that took place in Brussels. The fragments about Brussels were decontextualized, creating a post-apocalyptic tale tackling philosophical questions that easily competes with more traditional post-apo features.

Composing for Lying Angel
Started composing for a new animation film by Geert Broele in a Kris Mergan Production. Geert has created a strange but familiar world. We follow a few archetypical characters over the centuries. Musically it is quite the challenge, combining my own work with Piazolla and Nicole and Hugo. Long story but you will get to hear it when it is finished.

Congratulations to Dinara Drukarova for her well deserved price at the Warsaw Film Festival. My branche So Thin is a remarkable short, serene but intense, touching,honest. It was an honour to do the sound design for this short.
Le Ciel Flamand wins ‘Best Film award’

Le Ciel Flamand is de tweede speelfilm van Peter Monsaert, na het internationaal gelauwerde Offline.
In zijn nieuwe film zoomt hij in op de levens van drie generaties vrouwen. Monique en haar dochter Sylvie baten een baanbordeel uit op de grens van West-Vlaanderen en Frankrijk. Eline, het zesjarige dochtertje van Sylvie, is gefascineerd door de mysterieuze werkplek van haar mama en oma, waar ze nooit binnen mag. Een dramatische gebeurtenis plaatst de zekerheden in hun levens op een helling en zet de familiebanden onder druk.
In de hoofdrollen zien we o.a. Sara Vertongen (Binnenstebuiten) en haar dochter Esra Vandenbussche, Ingrid De Vos (De Behandeling, Chaussée d’Amour) en Wim Willaert (Eigen Kweek, Offline).
David Williamson tekende voor de fotografie, met Alain Dessauvage als monteur. Frederik Van de Moortel stond in voor de klankband van Le Ciel flamand gebaseerd op muziek van Bert Dockx. Klank en muziek zijn de thema’s van het filmfestival van Aubagne.
De film ging vorig jaar in wereldpremière op het Toronto International Film Festival. Na tussenstops op de Festivals van San Sebastian en Londen, was hij bij ons in aanloop van zijn bioscooprelease te zien op het Film Fest Gent. Vervolgens ging het naar o.a. Talinn , Göteborg, Rotterdam en Cinequest.
Le Ciel Flamand komt op 28 maart uit on demand en op DVD in de reeks Lumière Cinema Selection.
Producenten zijn Annemie Degrypse, Jan De Clercq en Alexander Vandeputte voor Lunanime (de productietak binnen de Lumière Groep).
Le ciel flamand kon rekenen op steun van het VAF/Filmfonds van Vlaams minister van Cultuur Sven Gatz. Daarnaast investeerde het economisch fonds Screen Flanders, een initiatief onder de bevoegdheid van Vlaams Minister van Economie Philippe Muyters en Minister van Cultuur Gatz, ook in de film.

Na een lang en complex parkoer eindelijk in de bioscoop te bewonderen. De nieuwe parel va Peter Monsaert; Le Ciel Flamand.
Compositie en sound design zijn van mijn hand, muziek is gebaseerd op opnames van gitarist Bert Dockx.
Synopsis
Le Ciel Flamand zooms in on the lives of three generations of women. Monique and her daughter Sylvie run a brothel on the border of West Flanders and France. Eline, Sylvie’s six-year-old daughter, is fascinated by the mysterious workplace of her mother and grandmother, but she is never allowed inside.
A dramatic event turns their lives upside down and the family ties are put under pressure.
Le Ciel Flamand is the second feature by Peter Monsaert, director of the internationally acclaimed Offline.
Löss wins Animaphix
Remember Löss? The animated medium metrage by Yi Zhao i did the sound design and score for finaly got the recognition it deserves at the Animaphix shortfilm festival. It was a very difficult film to produce, to animate, to sound design and to score, but i guess all that work paid off. Congrats to Yi (the director) , Geert (the animator) and Kris (the producer) for their hard work and perseverance.
Gerontophobia- composition and sound design
Almost there!
after a year or more of sketching, composing, orchestration and designing the sounds for this utopian parallel world Boris Sverlov has created, we have finished mixing.
A true vertical arrangement, loads of designed sounds, theremin, analog synths and a big score; strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and ‘extras’…
I am very excited about this one, can’t wait for it to hit the theatres…
In a utopian society, where science desperatly tries to find a cure for aging, something goes terribly wrong. A toxic cloud escapes and everything in its wake slowly dies. On an evacuating airship, overloaded with young people, a pregnant woman hijacks the helm and descends back into the dangerous gas in an attempt to save her abandoned lover.

Halfweg Premiere
Vanavond gaat de langspeelfilm ‘Halfweg’ van Geoffrey Enthoven in premiere.

SYNOPSIS
Stef zit midden in een scheiding en verhuist naar een prachtig huis dat hij flink onder de prijs heeft kunnen kopen. Daar wil hij in alle rust de dingen op een rij zetten, maar die rust wordt al snel verstoord. De vreemde Theo, die als een natte zwerver te pas en te onpas in het huis opduikt, beweert de ware eigenaar te zijn. Stef wil niet wijken en de pesterijen tussen de twee mannen lopen compleet uit de hand. Tot Stef ontdekt dat Theo inderdaad de vorige eigenaar is. En twee jaar geleden overleden. Maar dan staat er plots een jong meisje aan de deur en keert de rust weer. Of toch niet helemaal.

The Education is a film about a family facing an existential crisis. The girl, her sister, father and mother, …nobody goes unpunished in this spiral of self-destruction. The story, with at times pitch-black humor, drags us into a whirlpool of conflicts that trouble the family. Taboos are not avoided and that’s what makes these conflicts so identifiable.
a truly minimal musical sound design with a select sound pallet. Clear cut choices and not one note too much.

1m short animation ‘Vrede’ composition and sound design
De spanning tussen de beer Victor en het konijn Fritz loopt hoog op. Beide partijen hebben een arsenaal aan wapens maar is het om elkaar te beschieten?
Een nieuwe geweldige kort animatiefilm van Roman Klochkov (gekend voor o.a ‘Administrators) met een epische orchestrale score. Deze keer absoluut geen minimalisme, maar strijkers, koper, hout, koor en een uitgebreide sound design.
